The Maths Department at Queen Victoria School believe in Active Learning which allows our pupils to take ownership of what they are taught, leading to a highly flexible and interactive environment.

Each room within the Maths Department is equipped out with an interactive smartboard, which allows our students to play an active role in the teaching and learning of the class. Students can come to the board to write questions and go over answers with their classmates; they can even take the lesson if they wish! There is also the prospect of various colourful, interactive games to be played at the end of lessons if time permits.

The Maths Department also has 32 wireless handsets (which look like mobile phones) which are in daily use. They allow the pupils to answer questions remotely and guarantee that the teacher gets a response from every pupil in the class. The teacher is able to see who was right and who was wrong, leading to better quality formative assessment.

We have very high expectations within the Department and are firm believers in early presentation – indeed last session, 80% of our S3 group were awarded the highest level of qualification a year earlier than their peers around the rest of Scotland. Some students sit Higher in S4 and Advanced Higher in S5. It is the pleasure of the Maths Department to work with so many enthusiastic and talented individuals.
