Our focus in the Music Department is to do everything possible to encourage each individual pupil at Queen Victoria School, wherever his or her musical talents may lie.

The music department at Queen Victoria School provides class lessons for all P7, S1 and S2 pupils twice each week. These involve the pupils in a great deal of practical work on tuned and untuned percussion, electronic keyboards, drum kit, and voice. All the P7 pupils will be tested and given a two term taster on a wind band instrument. We also provide instrumental lessons, at a subsidised cost, on most instruments. We have visiting instructors for orchestral strings, piccolo, flute, clarinet, saxophone and bassoon, all brass instruments, clarsach, drum kit and tuned percussion and voice. More than a third of our pupils receive instrumental tuition.

We currently present pupils for Intermediate 2, Standard grade, Higher grade and Advanced Higher grade music and are very successful at all levels. Pupil may also sit ABRSM examinations.

The Department is well equipped with brand new five octave full size electronic keyboards, music computer systems, samba band instruments, acoustic and electronic drum kits, and over £20,000 of wind band instruments, used with the P7 classes. We also have enough electric guitars and drum kits for lots of rock bands!

The Music Department has a number of performance opportunities both in school and in the community. The P7 groups will normally perform in a number of venues each year as well as being part of the Christmas and Summer Concerts. These concerts can often involve half the school as performers and are a highlight for pupils and parents. Pupils also perform in local venues including Stirling schools concerts. We are lucky to have a number of visiting groups work with our pupils including projects with Scottish Opera, the Band of the Royal Marines and Bands from the RAF. These events have involved pupils in workshops, performances and visits to concerts.
